Have you ever been to a 90s party? Possibly not but it’s time to get used to them. The concept of the 60s, 70s and 80s party has proven very popular over the years. People love nostalgia and a party that celebrates a time gone by is a fantastic opportunity for people to relive their younger days and reconnect with a simpler time. For the last decade, the 80s party has been most successful but when you consider that 1990 was nearly 30 years ago and those who were teenagers back then are now approaching middle age, it’s time for a new era of nostalgic parties, it’s time for the 90s party to take over. In this post we will share 5 of the most important things your 90s party will need to get authentic 90s vibe.
Toys
You might not consider toys to be an essential part of a party, but what a great way to bring out the excited playful side of your guests. Try to get hold of a few of the following; barbies, furbies, trolls, Tamagotchis, beanies, and popstar dolls including Britney Spears, the Spice Girls and Boyzone. These are just a few ideas, the toy market was massive in the 90s and your guests will remember them clearly.
Decor
Bright, fluorescent, clashing colours were big in the 90s so keep this in mind as you dress the venue. To really bring back memories have a look on eBay for posters and merchandise that represent 90s television. Search for Boy Meets World, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Kenan & Kel, Saved by the bell and 90210. Of course there are so many more but hopefully that will get you started.
Fancy Dress
The 90s clothes were iconic but what young people wore often depended on what music they listened to and icons they followed. For inspiration look at people like Will Smith, MC Hammer, Kurt Cobain, The Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys and every single outfit from the film Clueless. To inspire your guests you could set up a Facebook group with links and pictures to these celebrities and possibly links to fancy dress shops online that sell these ‘fashionable’ outfits too.
Food
You might not be able to get hold of some of the old school products available from the 90s but there are some still going strong today, you just need to know what to put into Google (pretty much anything can be found online with the right search terms and perseverance). You can also search for retro sweets and food packaging online to find some gems. There are some still available in the shops though for example Push Pops Mentos and sunny D. If you are organising a buffet make sure you add a salad with balsamic vinegar and sun-dried tomatoes!
Music
The 90s were a decade of boy bands, dance and grunge, there was something for everyone and so it will be easy enough to please your guests with a range of banging classic tunes. Here are just a few to get you started on that playlist…
